Coaching on the delightful Soča river in Slovenia last week reminded me just how important it is to tick all four of the TTPP boxes when preparing for a white water trip. Most paddlers who are regularly on the water are generally well-equipped in the technical and physiological boxes, but attention to the tactical and psychological ones can highlight development opportunities. On fast-flowing Alpine white water tactics and the importance of planning your moves ahead takes on a new dimension for those used to slower UK rivers. It was great to see the way last week’s group increasingly were focusing not only on the next move but the one after that, looking ahead to plan for the next series of moves as they navigated around rocks and holes autonomously. And on the psychological front? Well, banning negative talk and selecting sections of the river to match individual paddlers’ real capabilities led to some very satisfying outcomes!
