Put a buzz in your coaching

Nene WWC (16)Coaches will be very familiar with the IDEAS coaching model. The Introduction – Demonstration – Explanation – Activity – Summary approach is ideal when introducing beginners to paddlesport and for introducing new skills or concepts to improvers. Yet while in our coach training we acknowledge that IDEAS is not the only coaching model how often do we look at others?

An approach to coaching improvers that I find extremely helpful is WASP – Watch – Analyse – Set Goals – Practice. WASP helps us build on the coaching behaviours taught at Level 1 and Level 2 to use our observation and analysis skills as a basis for discussion with our student(s) to agree appropriate goals and set up effective practice structures. As with IDEAS, WASP is well-suited to a tiered approach, working on one particular aspect and then layering further development on that foundation.

If you’ve not used WASP before, give it a go. You may find that it adds a real buzz to your next coaching session!
