I’m delighted to have been confirmed as a provider of British Canoeing’s new Coach Award which replaces the former Level 2 Coach qualification. From next spring I’ll be offering the Core Coach training course and also discipline-specific training and assessment courses for Canoe and/or Kayak (Sheltered Water) Coach, Open Water Canoe Coach and White Water Canoe Coach.
You’ll find details and initial dates for the new award courses on my website but for those of you who haven’t got your head around what this all means I would highlight that the only pre-requisite for Core Coach training is British Canoeing membership. No need to hold a previous coaching qualification, no need for any Star awards, no need to register, no minimum age…
That said you will be expected to have some prior knowledge of coaching and of paddling!
If you’re already a Level 1 Coach, great, you’re well-placed to sign up and start developing the coaching behaviours you’ll have learned on that course. If you’ve completed Level 2 Coach training but don’t feel ready for assessment the core course could be just what you need to re-invigorate your coaching; if you are looking for assessment get in touch – very little has changed for you! If you qualified years ago as an Instructor or Senior Instructor or have been coaching informally and want to engage with the new award, the new Paddlesport Instructor eLearning programme (which will be freely available in the New Year) will help ensure you have an appropriate level of prior knowledge.
I’m really looking forward to delivering the new award in 2018. I hope many of you will be equally keen to take your coaching to a new level too!
Best wishes to you all for the festive season!
