A new (to me) touring canoe and National Go Canoeing Week has provided the impetus to spend a relaxing few hours on the Thames this month enjoying some paddling with no schedule, no programme and no syllabus. What a delight!
Cruising along at a gentle pace I found myself watching the slowly changing sights along the bank rather than asking what might be around the next bend or wishing a distant bridge or lock to come more quickly. It was a pleasant change to be enjoying the moment rather than thinking about what was next.
The Thames is at its best at this time of year. Vibrant greens, with fresh white cow parsley, yellow flag irises and pink dog roses blooming all around. Coots, moorhen, heron, swans and all manner of other ducks and geese with their young in tow. The now ubiquitous red kites mewing and circling above. And a steady flow from the last of the winter rains. What better place to be?
